Essential Oils are generally safe, effective and a pleasant alternative to toxic or synthetic fragrances in our lives, but the following precautions are advised when using essential oils for aromatherapy:
PREGNANT WOMEN - DO NOT use products with the essential oils rosemary, clary sage, common sage, spanish sage, buchu, angelica, celery seed, tarragon, snakeroot, calamintha, cedarwood, labdanum, myrrh, cumin, citronella, fennel, star anise, juniper (stimulates the uterine muscle), bay laurel, lovage, basil, marjoram, oregano, parsley, aniseed, savory, and ajowan. Avoid Rose within the first 4-5 months of pregnancy. Consult your physician prior to using a product that could affect your unborn child (for example a heated back pillow could alter the temperature of the baby and some aromatherapy can induce contractions, etc).
EPILEPTICS - Avoid products containing rosemary, fennel, and sage
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE - Avoid rosemary, sage, and thyme
DIABETICS - should not use angelica
